An ordinary day in Romania. Under a highway exit close to Bucharest, Lidia and Denisa are changing their clothes; warm pullovers and sneakers are exchanged for tight tops and heels. The two are then waiting for clients, an icy wind gusting around their ears.

On a bleak island where monolithic concrete buildings rise above the windswept horizon lies work-colony #191286. Piwonka is one of a handful of migrant workers who are forced to work here under harsh conditions. But then Margarita observes how the crush on Ariana can get out of control and a dark secret is imposed on the class community. Margarita is faced with a conflict of conscience for which there seems to be no solution.

Nina, a young actor, returns to the Ruhr region for her grandmother’s funeral. Tensions surface between her and her mother. The noises of a small town fill the eloquent silences in the complex mother-daughter relationships explored in this endearing film.

Grey house facades roll by like monstrous walls. Numerous identical windows, creating lines of lights as they pass by steadily. The bike courier Michel pushes through crowded streets of a dystopian city of the future. On behalf of the monopoly Clinair, he delivers oxygen tanks that are now necessary.

Gölge, which means “shadow” in Turkish, is the name of a teenage girl. Gölge is the daughter of Turkish immigrants and belongs to the so-called “second generation” at the end of the 1970s. She lives with her younger sister and her parents in a small two-room apartment in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Real estate agent Christian travels the countryside scouting for investment prospects. In a forgotten, seemingly abandoned village far off the main roads, he finds more than he is looking for. Getting entangled in an encounter with a taciturn teenage farmhand, he confronts his sexual frustrations and, in the process, gets drawn into the undergrowth of a bloodthirsty rustic community.

Lenz is a daydreamer. Charming, visionary and – as it is good manners for a thirty-year-old in Berlin – radically incapable of decision making. After an intense party night, Lenz wakes up next to Ira, completely deranged. Lenz is in love. As well as Ira. The summer of love begins: fooling through the nights of Berlin, beers at the canal, talks about sex and childhood. Everything is beautiful. Up until the moment when Ira asks this one question that changes everything: „Do you want to have kids?“ Now is the time for Lenz to do what he knows best, when things get tricky. He runs off. Anchorless, he stumbles through the summer and has to take up with the heroes of his daydreams, who keep examining him about his feelings. Meanwhile, his friend Kenn covers Lenz with affectionate incomprehension. When autumn arrives, Ira eventually confronts Lenz and he has to face the big “whatsoever”.

Poet Wigald plans a meticulous suicide, but his estranged father interrupts, seeking reconnection as his marriage crumbles. During their tense conversation, Wigald collapses and is rushed to intensive care. In his hospital room, the fractured family reunites, yet the parents’ own conflicts overshadow concern for their son’s state.

The social democrats of the sixties and seventies worked on their grand plan to build a highway network in Germany that every German citizen could reach within five minutes of their home. The little film hangs around between and on the streets of this network - where the country discos, pedestrian zones, shopping centers, hospitals and roads home are behind noise barriers.

Three people were sitting in the cafe when the man enters. Not all saw the donkey, he has staked out. No one could remember what he ordered. Wherever he went, and no one knew. But a short time later, three people are dead.
